If you consider yourself a connoisseur of fighting games, then you know this statement to be true – DLC is inevitable (shout out to Thanos).
Today’s fighting games continue to keep their communities thriving and satisfied through the practice of “Season Passes.” These digital DLC packages tend to do an awesome job of keeping things fresh by including brand new character costumes, stages, modes, etc.
The biggest piece of notable content that comes with fighting game Season Passes is undoubtedly new characters. One of the main development studios that have mastered the art of fighting game character DLC is NetherRealm Studios. Ever since the launch of 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot, Ed Boon and his talented team of developers have produced several memorable DLC characters for its violent fighters. Minds were blown and countless jaws have hit the floor during the reveals for Kratos in Mortal Kombat (2011), Predator in Mortal Kombat X and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2.
NetherRealm is staying on brand with its wild DLC roster inclusions thanks to the first set of fighters attached to Mortal Kombat 11’s “Kombat Pack.” Longtime MK “Kombatants” Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Sindel are returning alongside three special guests in the form of the Terminator T-800, Joker and Spawn. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that NetherRealm usually produces more than one season of characters for their fighting games. Our gut’s telling us MK 11 has a long DLC road schedule ahead of it and a second Kombat Pack in its future.
Should MK 11 bless us with even more characters, these are the fighters we’d flip our lids for if they walked onscreen during a new Kombat Pack trailer.
If there’s one thing that doesn’t really stick in Mortal Kombat, it’s the demise of a beloved character. All the Fatalities and story-related deaths in the world can’t permanently eliminate any of the franchise’s fighters. Kitana may have decapitated her vicious “sibling” and adopted a few of her moves, but we’re sure that won’t stop her from making the roster for MK 11. The return of Mileena is something plenty of MK fanatics are dying to see and it’d make sense for her to pop up within the second batch of DLC characters. The return of her signature Sai blades and brutal specials are due for a revival in MK 11.
MK 11’s epic story mode included several cool moments that series diehards went crazy for. For us, the most standout character cameo for us was Sheeva. Getting a glimpse of a visually updated rendition of the lady Shokan warrior was quite the surprise. At this point, it makes a ton of sense for her to be included in the game as a playable character.
Her character model is already complete, so all there is to do now is apply a move set and some sick alternate costumes & gear to her digital closet. Goro’s cool and all, but Sheeva’s just that much cooler to us. We’re fully prepared to stomp on the opposition and use Sheeva’s four-armed limbs to grapple everyone into submission.
Anyone with a keen ear has already heard the dialogue intros between Raiden and Cetrion. Our hearts dropped a bit when their conversations alluded to the death of one of the few decent characters from Mortal Kombat 4. That seemingly deceased character is the elemental god of wind, Fujin. But as we mentioned before, death doesn’t stop anyone from reappearing in the bloody realm of MK.
It’s been so long since we’ve brutalized our opponents with Fujin’s wind-based offset. Now’s the perfect time to remodel the wind god and amplify his cool factor by adding him to MK 11. Cetrion shouldn’t be the only character that’s capable of using mini-twisters to floor their foes. Fujin, the OG of wind-based abilities, needs to reclaim his honor.
Bloodshot (Comic Book Guest Character)
Mortal Kombat knows how to bring the hype. When it’s ready to get its rabid fanbase excited, it loves to do so by revealing shocking guest characters. MK 11 has already done fine work in that regard, but there’s clearly room for even more DLC surprises. Spawn has taken the place of the game’s first comic book guest entrant and we’re hoping he isn’t the only one. If Valiant Comics were down to collaborate with NetherRealm, then we’d love for them to allow Bloodshot to join MK 11’s growing roster.
The guy’s perfect for a fighting game as vicious as MK 11, if you ask us – he’s gifted with superhuman strength, he’s a master at hand-to-hand combat, he wields cyberkinesis abilities and he can even shapeshift! All of those powers combine to create a worthy character of inclusion in a NetherRealm fighting game. And hey, Bloodshot’s reportedly getting a movie in 2020! So his inclusion in MK 11 could be an awesome promotional tool for the character’s big-screen debut.
Doomguy (Video Game Guest Character)
Just take a look at Doomguy’s weapons locker – DOOM’s iconic protagonist has access to a super shotgun, rocket launcher, chaingun and the ever-popular BFG-9000. And if he’s not in the mood to blast demons into oblivion, he’s more than willing to tear them in half with his beloved chainsaw. 2019’s DOOM Eternal is doing, even more, to fill out Doomguy’s arsenal and make him walking kryptonite to the denizens of Hell.
With such an insane array of weapons at his disposal, Doomguy would make for a fine fighter if he were to ever be considered as DLC for MK 11. He seems pretty comfortable getting into some gory skirmishes, so we’re sure Bethesda and id Software would be pleased to feature their FPS hero in a fighting game. Now we’re getting excited at the prospect of Doomguy’s Fatalities taking place from a first-person perspective!
Kung Fury (Movie Guest Character)
When fighting games get crazy with their guest characters, we’re always down for them. It’s been hard picking our jaws up off the floor after witnessing Geese enter Tekken 7, Jason Voorhees makes it into Mortal Kombat X and Terry Bogard pop up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. MK 11 has already done a great job of throwing in a few DLC character curveballs and we’re hoping there’s more on the way.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is reprising his greatest movie role as The Terminator, which takes up a slot for the first Kombat Pack’s movie guest character. If a second Kombat Pack is in the works, we think it needs a movie guest as well. And that cinematic combatant should be the man known as Kung Fury! The dude is a walking love letter to corny 80s action films, which is why we cherish him so much. Kung Fury’s combat prowess is second to none, plus he’s known to sport a firearm or two. The dialogue sequences between him and Johnny Cage are worth the price of admission alone! Kung Fury has a movie sequel on the way, so getting more exposure for the martial arts master in MK 11 sounds like a smart move to us.
And with all that being said, we’re more than confident in our Kombat Pack 2 wishlist being a hit with fans. We hope you’re reading this, Ed Boon! Make our gory dreams come true.
