Where exactly did Luke’s blade go!?
Its been a question that's been playing on Star Wars fans' minds for almost forty years now, and it seems like a new Star Wars comic has given us the answer we've been looking for. If you recall in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker's lightsaber was seen falling from Cloud City but then reappeared as an essential prop in the sequel trilogy. For over four decades, fans have been left guessing where Luke Skywalker's blade has been following his epic battle with his father, Darth Vader.
What do we know now?
So glad you asked! It seems that we finally have the answer to the mind-boggling question thanks to a new Star Wars comic, which, as first reported on by IGN, reveals the answer in Star Wars #2. Flicking through the comic shows that a hooded character catches Luke's blue lightsaber in a robe after it tumbles through Cloud City, this appears on the splash page of the comic. The identity of said character is still a mystery, we only have the phrase "Follow your destiny." spoken by the figure, and you'll have to buy #3 to find out who is under the hood.
It was safe to assume that someone somewhere found Luke's lightsaber, but its a breath of fresh air to finally have some closure. There's nothing yet to suggest anyone managed to catch his hand though, and it'll be interesting to see where the Marvel Comics series goes to plot the course of Luke's blade to when it arrives in The Force Awakens. One thing is for sure, its nice to see some mysterious gaps being filled in.
The Star Wars legends comics from 2014 saw side stories and the Expanded Universe becoming non-canon, essentially leaving areas of the universe unexplored, which also included the whereabouts of Luke's lightsaber. Following being found by a Cloud City employee, Darth Vader uncovers the blade in the Legends series, but Star Wars #2 spins this completely, making the hooded character canon.
We could find out who this new figure in possession of the blade is in #3, and it's due for release on February 26. The issues that follow, #4, in particular, are listed on the Marvel store and details Luke seeking his missing lightsaber (could be a potential spoiler).
